Summit County, Colorado:
Overview:

Summit County is located 70 miles West of Denver, nestled on the Western slopes of the continental divide, making it one of the most spectacular settings in the Colorado Rockies. Most famous for the World Class skiing, but Summit County is rich in history, beauty, and year round recreation.

Summit County History

Summit County first came to the attention of the outside world around 1859 when prospectors discovered the rich veins of gold and silver. Fortune seekers flocked to the area and staked their claims. Eastern companies sent needed supplies, equipment, and able bodies to develop as many as 50 mining towns where tough, determined miners extracted the valuable ores from the mountains.

When the "Gold Standard" took effect during the civil war to provide security against the shaky dollar, gold and silver prices soared bringing more demand for the ores as well as the means to get in and out of an area surrounded by 13 - 14,000 foot mountains. "Roads" were constructed (scary things even in the best Jeep), and the railroad came to the area bringing civilization with it.

In 1893 silver prices plummeted, and much of the silver mining ceased. And, as the readily accessible gold and other ores were removed, it became too expensive to continue mining and soon almost all the towns were abandoned. Of the original 50 towns only five remain - Breckenridge, Frisco, Dillon, Montezuma, and what was Teller - today's Copper Mountain.

Remnants of the ghost towns and mines remain, and can be accessed by an extensive trail system throughout the county. Visit the History Museums in Dillon, Frisco, or Breckenridge before you go exploring to understand the determination and hardships those early miners and settlers experienced, and how they were able to live and prosper in such harsh conditions.

Recreational History begins

In 1946, a group of post-war ski enthusiasts inaugurated Arapahoe Basin Ski Area and Summit County discovered a new bonanza - SNOW!!!

With the opening of Breckenridge Ski Area in 1960, Keystone in 1971, and Copper Mountain in 1972, "The Summit" became one of the world's premier destination ski resorts. Millions of winter visitors flocked to the area annually. And many of those visitors made an astute observation: with the easy access to Denver via I-70, the exquisite beauty of Lake Dillon and the surrounding mountains, the colorful ghost town and mining history, and the wide variety of outdoor recreational possibilities, they concluded that Summit County would be a pretty great place to visit in the summer also.

That conclusion has led to a burgeoning year-round economy which, over the past 30 years, has been expanding at a continuous rate.
