Summit Housing Authority Overview
Summit Housing Authority is a non-profit agency dedicated in providing information and assistance to Summit County residents in all housing challenges.
Summit County Commissioners originally created Summit Housing Authority in 1979. For many years it was not operational. In 1989 an Affordable Housing Steering Committee was assembled and began to discuss housing problems under the direction of the County Commissioners and the Northwest Colorado Council of Governments. This resulted in the 1990 Needs Assessment and the reformation of the Summit County Housing Authority by the Town Councils and County Commissioners in December of 1991. Summit Housing Authority has served the housing needs of low/mod-income Summit County residents since 1992.
During the summer of 1995, a Summit County Housing Working Group was formed to address the affordable housing problem in Summit County. This group included citizens throughout the County. From this report a series of recommendations were formed and presented to town councils and planning commissions. The Housing Authority uses these recommendations as guidelines in developing and implementing housing programs. The Housing Authority operates with funds provided by Summit County Government; Town of Breckenridge; Town of Frisco; Town of Dillon; Town of Silverthorne; Breckenridge Ski Area; Keystone Resort; & Copper Mountain Resort.
In 1995, SHA formed a nonprofit called Summit Housing Development Corporation. Both entities are staffed by the same employees and are housed at the same location, 106 N. Ridge Street, Breckenridge, Colorado. Summit Housing is governed by a five member volunteer Board of Commissioners. The Board is comprised of experts in property management, real estate development, banking and employee housing. Summit Housing has three full time employees.
